Stroke - Types of Strokes

A stroke is a serious medical emergency that happens when blood flow to a part of the brain is reduced or completely blocked, cutting off the oxygen and nutrients needed by brain cells. This disruption can cause brain cells to begin dying within minutes, potentially leading to brain damage, long-term disability, or death. The two primary types of strokes are ischemic, caused by a blocked blood vessel, and hemorrhagic, caused by a ruptured blood vessel. Recognizing the signs of a stroke early and seeking immediate medical help can greatly improve the chances of recovery and reduce the risk of lasting complications.

Types Of Strokes:

There are three main types of strokes:

1. Ischemic Stroke: The most common type occurs when a blood vessel supplying the brain becomes blocked, often due to a blood clot or a buildup of fatty deposits, also known as plaque.
2. Hemorrhagic Stroke: This happens when a brain blood artery rupture, resulting in internal or external bleeding. It may be brought on by trauma, aneurysms, or elevated blood pressure.
3. Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA): Usually lasting anywhere from a few minutes to several hours, this is a temporary disruption in blood flow to the brain. It does not cause lasting damage, but it is a warning sign of a possible stroke in the future.

Each type of stroke requires immediate medical attention for the best chance of recovery.

When To See a Doctor:

It's critical to get help right away if you experience any symptoms of a stroke. Common warning indicators include drooping on one side of the face, difficulty speaking or interpreting speech, and weakness in one arm. Unexpected numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side, visual issues in one or both eyes, abrupt dizziness or loss of balance, and a severe headache without a clear reason are possible additional symptoms. Don’t hesitate to call emergency services if you observe any of these symptoms, as prompt treatment is essential to minimize serious damage.
