What is Pleural Effusion

The accumulation of extra fluid between the pleural layers outside of your lungs is known as pleural effusion, or "water on the lungs" as some people refer to it. Your lungs and the interior of your chest cavity are lined with thin membranes called pleura. Everyone's pleura typically contains a tiny amount of fluid. When you breathe, this fluid functions as a natural lubricant and facilitates the movement of your lungs. You have too much fluid surrounding your lungs when you have pleural effusion, though. This indicates that either your body is creating too much fluid or is not absorbing enough of what it is creating.

Types of Pleural Effusion:

Depending on the type of fluid surrounding your lungs, pleural effusion is classified into two categories by medical professionals. Extra fluid could be:

• Protein-poor and watery (transudative): This type of fluid, for instance, is produced by heart failure or cirrhosis. An increase in fluid pressure is the cause of this kind of pleural effusion.
• Protein-rich (exudative): This type of fluid is produced, for instance, by infections or tumors. This kind of pleural effusion develops when either your lymphatic system isn't emptying enough fluid or too much fluid is passing through your tiniest blood vessels.
