Parkinson’s disease is a long-term illness that affects body movement. It happens when some brain cells stop working or die, especially in a part called the substantia nigra. These cells make dopamine, a chemical that helps control movement. When dopamine levels drop, people start having problems like shaking hands, stiff muscles, and trouble balancing. This disease mostly affects older people, usually after 60, but sometimes it can happen earlier. Doctors categorize Parkinson’s disease symptoms into two main types: motor and non-motor symptoms. Motor symptoms include tremors that usually start in the hands, fingers, or limbs while at rest.

Over time, patients experience bradykinesia, or slowness of movement, making routine activities difficult. Muscle rigidity often leads to pain and reduced range of motion. Postural instability makes it hard to maintain balance and increases the risk of falls. Non-motor symptoms include cognitive changes, where many patients struggle with memory problems and, in some cases, dementia. Mood disorders like depression and anxiety are also common. Sleep disturbances, such as insomnia, restless leg syndrome, and excessive daytime sleepiness, frequently affect patients. Many also experience a loss of smell, an early but often overlooked symptom.
